Track Mountain Gorillas in Their Natural Home

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to roughly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. This safari takes you deep into the ancient rainforest for a face-to-face encounter with a habituated gorilla family — one hour in their presence that stays with you for a lifetime.

Along the way you’ll drive through Uganda’s scenic western rift valley, visit the Batwa pygmy community to learn about their forest heritage, and enjoy comfortable lodges perched on Bwindi’s forested hills.

Trip Itinerary

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Depart Kampala after breakfast and head westwards to Fort Portal town, a scenic 4-5 hour drive. Lunch in Fort Portal, then continue toward Bwindi through the beautiful crater lakes region. Dinner and overnight at your lodge on the edge of the forest.
After an early breakfast and ranger briefing, enter the forest with your trekking group. The hike to find your assigned gorilla family can take 2-6 hours depending on their movements. Once located, spend a magical hour observing the gorillas at close range before returning to your lodge for a well-earned rest.
Visit the Batwa pygmy community, the original forest-dwelling inhabitants of Bwindi, to learn traditional hunting, medicine and storytelling skills. In the afternoon, enjoy an optional guided nature walk through the forest to spot birds, butterflies and monkeys.
After breakfast, check out and begin the scenic drive back to Kampala or directly to Entebbe International Airport, with a stop for lunch en route. Arrive in the evening in time for onward travel.
