Detailed Itinerary for 5 days Bird watching Safari in Rwanda

DAY 1: Arrival in Rwanda

On the 1st day of the safari you will be picked up from Kigali international airport upon arrival by a representative of Webstarsafaris Tours who will also be your driver for this safari, depending on the time of your arrival you will go for a short city tour visiting Kigali Genocide Memorial centre where you will learn more about the culture and history of Rwanda and its people. in the evening you will have dinner and stay overnight

DAY 2 : Transfer Bird watching in Nyabarongo and Nyarutarama 

On the 2nd day of the safari you will have breakfast at the hotel and then drive Nyabarongo river wetland, Nyabarongo river wet is a habitat to many bird species such as Madagascar squacco heron, papyrus gonolek, carruthers’ cisticola, white-winged scrub-warbler, papyrus yellow warbler, sharpe’s pied babbler, northern brown –throat weaver and many more which you will enjoy seeing. You will have lunch and in the afternoon you will drive to Nyarutarama artificial lake for another bird watching experience, at the lake you will spot many birds such as paradise flycatcher, pygmy kingfisher, black egret, grey-capped warbler, African fish eagle, black kite, swifts, swallow, winding cisticola and many more. in the evening you will drive back to your hotel, have dinner and stay overnight.

DAY 3 : Full day birdwatching in Akagera National park

On the 3rd of the safari you will have breakfast then head to Akagera national park for a full bird-watching experience, as you drive through acacia and papyrus vegetation you will spot many birds such as Red-faced Barbet, Bennetts Woodpecker, Papyrus Gonolek, White-headed, Black and familiar Chats, Carruther’s and Tabora Cisticolas, White-winged and Broad-tailed Warblers, Miombo Wren-Warblers, lesser kestrel, shoe bill stork, grey crowned crane, squacco herons, African open bill stock, African darter, water thick-knee and many more. At lunch, you will drive back to the lodge for lunch and then return to the park for another bird-watching experience, in the evening you will return to your lodge, have dinner and stay overnight.

DAY 4 : Morning bird watching and transfer back to Kigali

On the 4th day of the safari you will have early morning breakfast then head to Akagera national park for a bird watching experience, as you drive through the park you will spot many beautiful birds such as Sauza’s shrike, Arnot’s chat, long-tailed cisticola, great snipe, lesser kestrel, shoe bill stork, grey crowned crane, squacco herons, African open bill stock, African darter, water thick-knee and many more. While in the park you will also spot animals such as leopards, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebras, antelopes, and many more. After the experience, you will drive back to your lodge for lunch, checkout, and drive to Kigali where you will reach in the evening. You will have dinner and stay overnight.

DAY 5 : Bird watching in Bugesera Valley and depart

On the 5th of the safari, you will have an early morning breakfast then drive to Bugesera valley for bird watching safari experience, Bugesera valley is home to many bird species and while on bird watching experience in the valley, you will spot birds like papyrus gonolek laniarius mufumbiri, papyrus canary crithagra koliensis, white-winged swamp, warbler Bradypterus carpalis, white collared oliveback nesocharis ansorgei, white-backed duck thalassornis leucontus and many more. From Bugesera Valley you will go on a visit to Ntarama and Nyamata genocide memorial sites where you will learn about the Rwanda genocide of 1994. You will have lunch and then be dropped off at Kigali international airport for drop off.
